The Sheridan Housing Action Committee (SHAC) was formed in September 2003 by a group of concerned citizens who recognized that most working families were being priced out of the local market. SHAC used the word "action" in the name because the group wanted to create systemic change and not simply talk about it or do another study to set on a shelf. The group wanted Sheridan to become a model community assessment identified affordable housing as the #1 Concern for Sheridan residents.
Two years of research in best practices followed and the SHAC office officially opened in July 2006 with a single staff member. SHAC's philosophy is to enhance economic vitality by creating housing opportunities in partnership with the private sector and government. Our mission is affordable housing for working families. Housing development efforts by SHAC are concentrated in the core of the community and require mixed income design to preserve our traditional Wyoming neighborhoods. All participants are required to complete homebuyer education, individual financial counseling and provide a buy-in of 2% of the purchase price.
SHAC educates homebuyers, policy makers and the public about local housing challenges. Buyers who may not be ready to purchase a home can join the SHAC Homebuyer Club and Action IDA (Individual Development Account) Program. SHAC finances with silent second mortgages and down payment assistance. SHAC also builds homes and facilitates affordable housing development, through various local partnerships.
The SHAC Board of Directors is comprised of community experts in all areas of the housing industry.
